Puerto Rico defeated Turks and Caicos Islands 12-0 in their encounter on August 11 in the CFU Girls’ Under-14 Challenge Series, but the story of the day was the support and applause for the underdogs.
Playing at home, the Puerto Ricans were thoroughly celebrated by the crowd, but the loudest applause came when a TCI forward rose to her feet after hitting the ground, subsequently leaving the pitch. The spectators continued to spread love when the young player returned to the field and once more as the team exited the venue for the bus.
The victory saw the home team move on to 9 points, same as Haiti, but Haiti has 54 goals to Puerto Rico’s 33. Both teams will meet in the final match on August 13.
In the other encounter, Anguilla and Bonaire played to a nil-all finish. Anguilla will play Turks and Caicos Islands in the penultimate match on August 13.
