Cuba seized all three points in the opening game of Group 4 in the 2014 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Caribbean Cup, thanks to a hard fought 2-0 victory over Suriname.
Playing at the Park Bayas Mirebalais Stadium in Haiti, the two teams were evenly contested up until the 62nd minute when Cuba took the lead with a goal from the penalty spot taken by Rachel Pelaez Ellis.
Yoana Calderon Gonzalez sealed the issue in the 83rd minute as her strike on goal ended up into the back of the net ending the game 2-0 in favour of Cuba. On Sunday June 1, Haiti meets Suriname at the same venue at 5:00pm.
The winner of this group will join the finalists from Groups 1, 2 and 3 namely Antigua & Barbuda, Martinique and Bermuda; and more importantly qualify for the finals set in Trinidad and Tobago later this year.
