PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (October 23, 2019) — The fifth and final group of the CFU Girls’ Under-14 Challenge Series kicks off here on Friday, with Cuba taking on Suriname at 5 pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium. Hosts Trinidad and Tobago play Grenada at 7 pm on the same day.
The Trinidad group will bring down the curtains on the developmental competition for which the first four groups were contested in August in Jamaica (Group 1), Cayman Islands (Group 2), Puerto Rico (Group 3) and St. Kitts and Nevis (Group 4).
Jamaica was best amongst a grouping that comprised, in order of finish, the Dominican Republic, Bermuda and Martinique.
Cayman Islands topped their point standings followed by St. Lucia, Curacao and Barbados in Group 2.
Playing in Puerto Rico in Group 3, Haiti’s young women were first ahead of the home team, Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos Islands, Anguilla and Bonaire.
Meanwhile, St. Vincent and the Grenadines earned Group 4 bragging rights, placing ahead of hosts St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica.
Cuba, Grenada, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago now have next in the round-robin tournament, which will run from October 25-29.
Haiti tops the scoring so far with 55 goals and also boasts of having the best goal scorer in the person of Walandjina Cyriaque, with 21 conversions.
The Group 5 event holds special significance for the TTFA, which is putting its Home of Football, specifically the Athletes Hotel Accommodation, to the test by providing the accommodations for the teams at the Ato Boldon stadium, Couva, Trinidad and Tobago.
