Barbados, Grenada and Suriname victorious in CNL openers

The Barbados Senior Men’s Team celebrate their 4-0 win over St. Martin in their Concacaf Nations League match on September 4, 2019 encounter at the Astro Turf Wildey Stadium
Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Member Associations Barbados, Grenada and Suriname all secured wins in their openers of the Concacaf Nations League on September 4, 2019.
Playing at home against St. Martin in Group A of League C, the Barbadians were 4-0 victors. The goal scorers were Omani Leacock (4’); Nicholas Blackman (15’, 49’); and Thierry Gale (64’).
In Grenada, the home team went ahead of St. Kitts and Nevis 2-1 in their Group A of League B match thanks to a Kairo Mitchell conversion in the 17′. Tahir Hanley levelled the score for St. Kitts and Nevis in the 57’, but Jamal Charles secured Grenada’s victory in minute 82.
Suriname, meanwhile, secured a win on the road, defeating Dominica 2-1 in the Group C of League B opener. Gleofilo Vlijter got the visitors off the mark in 7’. Anfernee Frederick tied the match in the 23’ with Vlijter scoring the game winner in the 91’.
Cayman Islands also had an away win, 2-0, over the United States Virgin Islands in the Group A of League C. After a goalless first half, Michael Martin netted just before the 60’. He added a second in the 94’ to seal the deal.
Elsewhere, St. Vincent and the Grenadines held Nicaragua to a 1-1 draw in their Group C of League B match in Nicaragua. Oalex Anderson gave the Vincentians the lead in 45+2. A Nicaragua corner in the 87’ gave way to the equalizer as Jamol Yorke scored an own goal.
Anguilla, playing in Guatemala in Group C of League C, were soundly beaten 10-0 by Guatemala, while Bermuda suffered an at-home defeat, 4-1, to Panama. The Group B League A contest in Hamilton, Bermuda saw Gabriel Torres open the scoring just after the 30’ mark. An own goal just before the half put the home team on the board, but the Panamanians hit back — Rolando Blackman, Torres again, and Adalberto Carrasquilla — to win the encounter.
Belize were unable to report for their Group A League B match against French Guiana scheduled to be played in French Guiana. As per competition rules, Belize were considered to have lost the match 3-0, and French Guiana were awarded three points.
