BRIDGEVIEW, Illinois (June 8, 2021)—The Group B Canada vs Suriname World Cup Qualifier was a highly anticipated encounter as both teams had the opportunity to advance to the next stage. Canada needed just a draw while Suriname needed to win. A second-half hat-trick by Jonathon David added to an earlier goal for a 4-nil score line and handed Canada their passport to the next round.

Both teams came out running for the first half of the match. Suriname’s first opportunity came when Tjaronn Chery took a free kick in the 11th minute, causing goalkeeper Milan Borjan to save, pushing the ball out for a corner.

Shortly after, Suriname continued to apply pressure, which created another opportunity for them in the 12th minute when a shot from Sheraldo Becker hit the crossbar, keeping the game at nil-all.

Canada had a chance in the 17th minute after David received a through pass, initiating a one-on-one with the Suriname custodian who brilliantly saved. A second chance came from the rebound but hit the crossbar.

The leveled score line was broken in the 37th minute of play after Alphonso Davies received a well-weighted ball and got past the defender to kick the ball through the legs of the keeper for the first goal of the match. The first half ended 1-0 in favor of Canada.

Six minutes into the second half, a shot by Davies caused the Suriname custodian to spill the ball out but no one was there to capitalize on the blunder.

In the 59th minute of play, Canada extended the lead with a pass from Davies to David, who hit the ball past the keeper who was off his line.

An opportunity for Suriname came in the 70th when Becker, who had a shot but passed to Mitchell Vrede, who hit the ball over the crossbar.

The third goal of the one-sided encounter came in the 73rd minute when Davies stepped over, fell down, then got up to quarter pass to David, who found the back of the net.

In the 76th minute of play, the referee pointed to the penalty spot after Suriname’s goalkeeper took down substitute Lucas Cavallini. David stepped up to the spot and secured his hat-trick.

Canada advance to the next round with a 4-0 victory over Suriname.
