Barbados’ Weymouth Wales record opening win over Police FC
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (July 27, 2025)—Weymouth Wales of Barbados wasted no time in their 3-0 win over Police FC of Trinidad and Tobago in Group C of the 2025 CFU Club Shield on Sunday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
The Barbadians opened the scoring in the third minute. Utilizing Mario Williams’ long throw-in, the ball was launched toward the back post, where Police goalkeeper Adrian Foncette misjudged its flight. The ball landed at the feet of Police defender Kaydion Gabriel, whose attempted clearance went awry, crashing off his crossbar. The rebound fell kindly to Andre Applewhaite, who made no mistake in finishing from close range to give Weymouth the early lead.
The match remained relatively subdued until the 43rd minute, when Applewhaite doubled his tally. The left back made a well-timed run off the ball and latched onto a precise pass from Akeem Hill. Demonstrating excellent composure, he placed his shot low into the far corner, giving Weymouth a 2–0 advantage.
Police FC responded immediately, pulling one back in the 45th minute. Kwesi Allen capitalized on a defensive mix-up between Applewhaite and Jaheim Neblett, finding himself with an open goal. He fired home confidently to cut the deficit to 2–1 heading into the halftime break.
The second half saw fewer chances, with both teams struggling to assert control. Despite finding themselves in promising positions, poor decision-making in the final third prevented either side from creating clear scoring opportunities.
Weymouth eventually extended their lead late in the half. Applewhaite, continuing his impressive performance, surged down the left flank and whipped in a low cross that found Romario Harewood. The forward struck first-time, sending the ball into the back of the net to secure the 3–1 win.
It was a strong start to the tournament for Weymouth Wales, who next face Wolues. Meanwhile, Police FC will take on SCSA Eagles on July 29, 2025.
