Couva, Trinidad (July 24, 2026) – Elite Sports Club FC of the Cayman Islands secured their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 CFU Club Shield with a convincing 2-0 victory over VG United FC at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Trinidad, on Friday.

Playing in the final fixture on Matchday 2, both teams struggled to find their rhythm during the opening stages, with clear-cut chances few and far between.

Elite SC broke the deadlock in the 16th minute thanks to an own goal by T'khoy Morton. Anfernee Hasani burst behind the VG United FC defense before delivering a dangerous cross that was inadvertently turned into his own net by the Virgin Gorda defender.

Elite nearly doubled their advantage in the 37th minute when Ashton Belcarris found himself in a promising position, but his close-range effort was struck straight at goalkeeper Mekhi Waters. The halftime whistle soon followed, with the Cayman Islands outfit taking a slender 1-0 lead into the break.

Both sides continued to exchange opportunities after the restart, but it was Elite SC that struck again in the 56th minute. Midfield talisman Barry Dre Tibbets stepped up to a free kick on the left edge of the penalty area and brilliantly curled his effort around the wall and into the bottom-left corner, giving Waters no chance.

VG United head coach Richie Morton turned to his bench in search of a response, and substitute Adrian Padilla came closest to pulling one back in the first minute of second-half stoppage time. However, his effort drifted harmlessly wide of the target.

Elite’s defense remained composed throughout the closing stages, comfortably dealing with the remainder of VG United FC's attacking threats to preserve their clean sheet.

When the final whistle sounded, Elite SC celebrated a well-earned 2-0 victory and a place in the Round of 16. The Cayman Islands representatives return to action on July 26 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, where they will face Delfines del Este of the Dominican Republic for a place in the quarterfinals.
