WILLEMSTAD, Curacao (June 8, 2021)—A goalless draw at home against Guatemala was all that was needed by Curacao to advance from Group C to the next stage of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Qualifiers.
There was early penetration from both teams when the met on Wednesday at Stadion Ergilio Hato, with much to play for. Curacao had a free kick flying towards goal as early as the third minute but somehow missed the target by inches.
Guatemala had their first effort on goal through Oscar Santis, but the man between the sticks, Eloy Room, made a spectacular save to only give up a corner.
Curacao continued to enjoy possession well into the half-hour mark. However, just minutes before halftime, Darwin Lom displayed some individual brilliance with great ball control, making his way past two Curacao defenders to get off a good shot that was goal bound but for Room’s brilliant save.
Guatemala pressed for the most part of the second half but, by that time, it was full-on defensive mode for Curacao, who only needed to maintain the status quo to advance.
The history books would not have it any other way as the Guus Hiddink lead team met the threshold for what was required on the night.
