Guyana, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago advance in 2020 WU20 Championship

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (February 26, 2020) – Guyana, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago are through to the Round of 16 of the 2020 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship thanks to victories in Group D and F.

Playing at Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Group D, Guyana fended off a late charge from Puerto Rico to claim a 2-1 win. Guyana got off the mark after an own goal from goalkeeper Cristina Roque. Roque appeared to have a firm grip on the ball but suddenly dropped it into the back of the net after a scorching shot from the Guyanese striker in the 54th minute. Aubrey Narine then tapped home a goal in the 81st minute after the defender failed to control a pass to give Guyana a 2-0 lead.

Puerto Rico had a late surge in the 88th minute when Gabrielle Cimino easily slotted home a goal in the 88th minute but it was not enough to get Puerto Rico back in the game.

Meanwhile, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago booked their spots in the Round of 16 after posting wins in Group F at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal.

In a hard-fought contest Trinidad and Tobago used a late push to defeat the Cayman Islands 2-0. Maria-Frances Serrant broke the nil-all deadlock in the 78th minute, slotting home a loose ball in the six-yard box. Afiyah Cornwall then finessed a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal bars after breaking free of two defenders.

Haiti, meanwhile, continued to showcase their scoring power with a 7-0 victory over St. Kitts and Nevis. Dayana Louis Pierre secured a brace in the 32nd and the 40th minutes along with Abaina Louis in the 36th and 46th minutes, while Melchie Dumornay 22nd minute, Mirlene Dorce 41st minute and Rose-Ayla Marcellus 55thminute all added to the tally of goals.

Haiti has now scored 15 goals in two matches after defeating the Cayman Islands 8-0 in their opening encounter.

Guyana, Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago will complete their group matches on the February 27. In Group D, Mexico vs Guyana 7:00PM at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez and Group F Haiti vs Trinidad and Tobago 4:00 PM at the Estadio Panamericano.
