ORLANDO, Florida (June 20, 2021)— Costa Rica edged out Jamaica 1-0 in the final group game to top Group C in Gold Cup 2021 when the teams met at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida on Tuesday night. The result meant that the Reggae Boyz finished second, however both teams advanced to the next round.

Both teams had equal possession of the ball in the first half, but Jamaica had the most shots on target. Andre Gray attempted to put the Reggae Boyz on the scoresheet in the 43rd minute play, but Costa Rica’s custodian Leonel Moreira saved. Another opportunity for Jamaica came just before the half from a Junior Flemmings strike, but Moreira was able to the task again. The first half culminated nil-nil.

Jamaica came out running on the resumption of the second half, which created several chances, but all proved futile. One such chance was in the 51st minute when Gray was one on one with the keeper, but hit the crossbar.

Costa Rica’s first real chance came in the 53rd minute, which resulted in a goal from Bryan Ruiz’s header. Jamaica tried to equalize in the 64th minute when Daniel Johnson took a shot in the penalty area, but Costa Rica’s keeper punched it out. Moreira came up with another save as he tipped Flemmings’ header over the crossbar. Moreira was shown the red card in the 76th minute when he used his hands outside of the box.

Moreira’s replacement, Esteban Alvarado, came up with a save for Costa Rica in the 80th minute after he denied Cory Burke’s shot. Alvarado made another save in the 83rd minute when he pushed Burke’s cross to safety. Jamaica continued to apply pressure in Costa Rica’s half and attempted to equalize in the 88th minute of play from a Leon Miller free kick that went way over the crossbar.

The win for Costa Rica sees them playing Canada while Jamaica will take on the United States in the quarterfinals.
