Martinique stop Anguilla to advance to Tier II final

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua (August 26, 2023)—Tier II darlings Anguilla were defeated 2-0 by Martinique when the sides met in semifinals action in the CFU Girls’ U14 Challenge Series on Saturday held at the ABFA Technical Centre in St. John’s, Antigua.
The Anguillans struggled for the first time, as they were caught on defense most of the game. Martinique came out on full attacking mode and wasted no time taking shots at goalkeeper Makiesha Connor.
The contrasting styles of football had Martinique moving the ball through lines and creating many combination plays around the Anguillan players. At the half, Martinique dominated although struggling to score.
It was in the 38′ that Martinique were awarded a corner that was sent into the 6-yard box and on to the boot of Samira Lamy, allowing her to confidently secure the first goal.
Anguilla responded with a counterattack soon after, but a Safiyah Gaskins attempt at scoring wide of the goal.
Martinique retaliated with a counterattack of their own that successfully secured their second goal. A ball over the top from defender Tessa Dorville was picked up by captain Djhameley Valentin outside the 18-yard box, who crossed it into the box. The ball was initially intercepted by Connor but then let loose allowed Leina Honorin to place shoot into back of the net in the 69’. Zeila Harrigan received a yellow card in the 69th minute of play.
With the lead extended for Martinique, they focused heavily on defending their it and made sure to deny every attempt from Anguilla
At the final whistle, it was Martinique over Anguilla 2-0, setting up a Guadeloupe-Martinique final showdown. That match is scheduled for 11:30 am on Sunday.
