Mixed bag for CFU teams in CNL latest round

Caribbean teams in League A had mixed results in the latest round of Concacaf Nations League qualifying. Cuba went down 7-0 away from home to the United States in Group A where they sit close to Group B relegation. Bermuda also fell, 5-1 to Mexico, leaving all three teams in Group B with 3 points. Trinidad and Tobago also suffered a loss, 2-0 loss to Honduras, as the Soca Warriors missed a chance to top Group C. Honduras continued their fine form, grabbing a 1-0 victory over Martinique in their final match of this round. Haiti, however, held Central American giants Costa Rica to a 1-1 draw, keeping their qualifying hopes alive. Costa Rica were held to a 0-0 draw by Curacao, which keeps Curacao in contention for automatic qualification to the Gold Cup.

In League B Grenada continued their undefeated run with a 0-0 draw away to French Guiana. However, in the return leg, the men from the Spice Isle edged French Guiana 1-0, topping Group A with 10 points. Meanwhile, St. Kitts and Nevis defeated Belize 4-0 in their first leg of a back-to-back encounter. Belize would get revenge by defeating St. Kitts and Nevis in the follow-up match 1-0, keeping themselves as contenders in a very competitive group.

In Group B, Montserrat went down 2-0 at home to Central American visitors El Salvador in their second home game of the campaign. Montserrat would, however, gain a point by holding the Dominican Republic to a draw. In other fixtures in the group, the Dominican Republic snatched three points after defeating St. Lucia 3-0, bouncing back from an earlier encounter to Montserrat last match day. El Salvador continued their victorious run by defeating St. Lucia 2-0.

Group C would see Guyana host Antigua and Barbuda where they defeated the Benna Boys 5-1, regrouping from a 2-1 defeat days before in Antigua. The win puts Antigua and Barbuda and Guyana level on 6 points, with Guyana second in the table with a superior goal difference. Jamaica continued their dominance in Group C, defeating Aruba 6-and topping the standings with 12 points.

In a very open Group D, St. Vincent and the Grenadines held Suriname to a 2-2 draw at home, scoring a late goal to equalize the match in the first leg. As both teams battled in their second match in Suriname, the visitors defeated the hosts 1-0 in the reverse fixture. Dominica, meanwhile, were defeated by Nicaragua 3-1 away from home, followed by a 4-0 defeat in Dominica by the Central American visitors. St. Vincent and the Grenadines currently top the group with 8 points followed by Nicaragua and Suriname both on 7 points and Dominica yet to gain their first points of the campaign.

Group A in League C saw Barbados defeat the US Virgin Islands 1-0 and 4-0 respectively in both fixtures. Both victories left Barbados tied on 9 points with the Cayman Islands who had a tough time with Sint Martin.

The Bahamas defeated the British Virgin Islands 4-0 in Group B. The BVI would take on Bonaire in their second match of the round where they lost 4-3 after Bonaire scored two late goals to gain the victory, leaving them tied on 6 points with The Bahamas.

Anguilla hosted Guatemala but would fail to make an impact, as they were defeated 5-0. They would also take on Puerto Rico at home and lost 2-3. Guatemala has 9 points and Puerto Rico picking up their first win in Nations League play.

In Group D, Sint Maarten hosted Turks and Caicos Islands and Guadeloupe. Their first match of this round saw Sint Maarten defeated 5-2 by Turks and Caicos followed by a 2-1 defeat to Guadeloupe in the last match of the round. Guadeloupe sits atop Group D with 9 points followed by Turks and Caicos with 3 points.
