PANAMA CITY, Panama (June 9, 2021)—A first half strike from Anibal Godoy and second half contributions from substitutes Edgar Bárcenas and Cecilio Waterman in Wednesday’s Group D World Cup Qualifier match against the Dominican Republic saw Panama secure a place in the round with a near-perfect record.
It took only nine minutes for Panama to open the scoring, and they did it in grand fashion. A poor clearance found Godoy free as the wind at the top of the 18-yard box, and, with two touches—one to control and the other to volley home past Rafael Diaz in the Dominican Republic goal—he made the score 1-0.
Despite much back and forth action and many chances from both sides, the second goal never came until substitute Bárcenas extended the lead in the 67th minute.
The Dominican Republic fought as hard as they could but to no avail.
The icing on the cake for Panama came in the 86the minute from Waterman. He ran into a through pass and got his shot off, but it hit the post. It was almost magical as the ball land right back at his feet. He made no mistake in putting the rebound home, driving the fans in a frenzy and Panama into the next round of matches.
Panama join St. Kitts and Nevis, Canada, Curacao, Haiti and El Salvador in Round Two.
