HOUSTON, Texas (June 10, 2021)—The Jamaica Reggae Girlz secured a 1-0 victory over Nigeria when the two sides met in the opening game of the 2021 WNT Summer Series on Thursday.

Defender Deneisha Blackwood netted the winner in the 51st minute, breaking the nil-all deadlock in punishing hot and humid conditions.

Before that, Jamaica came close to scoring in the 25th minute after Jody Brown was awarded penalty shot. But her attempt went straight to the Nigerian keeper, Tochukwa Oluehi.

Nigeria had a 50th minute goal disallowed for being offside.

Jamaica is using the June 10-16 competition as training for World Cup Qualifiers that begin in November.

The four-team competition features Jamaica, Nigeria, USA and Portugal.

The Reggae Girlz’s second and final match is against the USA on June 13.
