Honduras 3-2 Panama

San Pedro Sula, Honduras—Second-half heroics by Panama stunned Honduras for a 3-2 win in Honduras.

Honduras seemed destined to get their first win, not only at home but in the final eight. Alberth Elis forced his way onto a ball that wasn’t dealt with be the Panamanian defense and calmly slotted his shot home in the 30th minute to give the home team the lead.

Panama seemed uneasy and were unable to find their footing for most of the game and allowed Honduras to get the better of time. Christian Martinez miscued his attempted clearance from a cross, and the ball found Brayan Moya with only the goalkeeper to beat, and, with all the time and space in the world, he did just that and Honduras was flying high in the 59th minute, well on their way to their first victory.

Thomas Christiansen’s three-man substitute in the 66th minute proved to be the deciding factor, and Panama found strength through a man who has proven to be a beacon of light.

Cecilio Waterman was introduced into the game in the 66th minute, and 11 minutes later pulled one back for his team following a miscommunication at the back for Honduras.

Another substitute, Cesar Yanis, got the equalizer in the 81st minute—a superbly weighted pass coupled with a death-touch control and clinical finish.

Goalkeeper Luis Lopez brought down Jose Fajardo just on the brink of the penalty area, resulting in a free kick that would wrap up a sensational comeback for Panama when skipper Eric Davis got his left-footed effort around the wall and into the back of the net in the 85th minute. The comeback victory puts Panama in the play-off spot of the group, leaving Honduras in the cellar, winless.

Panama will travel to El Salvador and Honduras will make the trip to Costa Rica on Tuesday, November 16, 2021.
